Phu Quoc Diving & Snorkeling 2026

Phu Quoc's underwater world punches above its weight for a Vietnamese island: the An Thoi archipelago offers 15+ dive sites, healthy coral gardens, clear water (15–20m visibility in dry season), and genuinely affordable operators. It's not Sipadan and it's not Raja Ampat — but for the price, ease, and warmth, it's an excellent entry-level tropical diving destination.

Why Dive Phu Quoc

Three honest reasons the water here is worth a day:

What's not: mega-fauna. No mantas, no whale sharks, reef sharks are rare. It's reef-life and macro territory.

Best Dive & Snorkel Sites

The An Thoi archipelago (south Phu Quoc, 15 inhabited and uninhabited islets) is the main dive zone. Top sites by difficulty:

Dive Operators in 2026

Reputable operators based on recent traveler reviews (2025–2026). Always check current TripAdvisor and Google reviews before committing:

Red flags to avoid: operators without PADI/SSI affiliation, boats with 10+ divers, rental-only gear that looks worn, no dive briefing offered, "discover scuba" that goes below 12m (illegal under PADI standards).

When to Dive

Best: December–January — peak visibility (18–20m+), flat seas, 95% boat-out probability.

Good: November, February–April — still dry season, occasional swell.

Mixed: May, October — transitional months, weather variable, prices lowest.

Worst: July–September — most weather cancellations, visibility can drop to 5–10m.

Snorkel-Only Day Tours

The classic 4-island boat tour is Phu Quoc's most popular day activity: $20–30 per person for a full day including lunch, fruit, snorkel gear, and 3–4 snorkel stops. Typical route from An Thoi:

Some tours include a fishing stop ("catch and release" in theory, "catch and grill" in practice). Others offer a kayak option at the beach stop. Ask what's included before booking.

Certifications & Courses

PADI Open Water: 3–4 days, $380–450, all-inclusive. Suitable minimum age 10 (for Junior Open Water). No prior experience needed, but you need to be comfortable in water. Includes 4 open-water dives down to 18m maximum. Certification card is for life.

PADI Advanced: 2–3 days after Open Water, $320–380. Adds 5 specialty dives (deep, night, navigation, etc.).

Refresher courses for certified divers who haven't dived in a year or more — $50–70, half-day, basic skills review.

Marine Life You'll See

Every dive: parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, damselfish, clownfish (anemone fish — they come up to the mask), moray eels, sea stars, blue-spotted stingrays resting on sand.

Sometimes: sea turtles (green and hawksbill), barracuda schools, grouper 1m+, pufferfish, lionfish, nudibranchs for the macro-inclined, seahorses in sea grass areas.

Rarely: reef sharks (mostly blacktip), large napoleon wrasse, octopus (night dives).

What to Bring

FAQ

How early should I book? Peak season (Dec-Feb), book 3–5 days ahead. Shoulder, 1–2 days. Off-season, same-day often works.

Can I dive if I can't swim well? For Discover Scuba, basic swimming is required (100m swim, 10 min float). For Open Water, real swimming ability is needed.

Is snorkeling safe for kids? Yes, for ages 6+, with parent supervision and properly-fitted masks. Bring your own fin size for kids — rentals often don't have small sizes.

Are there sharks? Rare — blacktip reef sharks occasionally. They're small, shy, and not dangerous to divers.

What about box jellyfish or stingers? Rare on Phu Quoc. Some seasonal jellyfish in August–October but not the dangerous types.

Can I dive on the same day as arrival flight? Not recommended — most operators require 24h post-flight before first dive for safety.
