Phu Quoc Visa Guide 2026 — Visa-Free Rules, E-Visa & Extensions

Phu Quoc has a special visa exemption that makes it one of the easiest Southeast Asian destinations to visit — but the rules are confusing, the info online is often outdated, and the wrong assumption can end your trip before it starts. This is the complete, 2026-current guide: who gets visa-free, how to apply for the Vietnam e-visa, what counts as “Phu Quoc only” vs “Vietnam proper”, how to extend, and how digital nomads rotate for long stays.

⚠️ Rules change. Vietnam's visa policy has been updated multiple times in the past 3 years. Always verify current rules at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn (official government site) and check your embassy's travel advisories before booking. The information below is accurate as of April 19, 2026.

Phu Quoc 30-Day Visa Exemption

The Phu Quoc Island 30-day visa exemption is a special policy that treats Phu Quoc differently from mainland Vietnam. The three conditions that must ALL be true to qualify:

If all three are true, you skip the visa process entirely. Show your passport, receive a 30-day stamp, and collect your bag. It is genuinely the simplest entry procedure in all of Southeast Asia.

Which airlines fly direct to PQC? Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, Bamboo Airways from major Asian hubs; several charter airlines from Russia and Europe seasonally; direct flights from Seoul (Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines), Bangkok (VietJet), Taipei (EVA), Singapore (VietJet). The list grows each year.

Vietnam E-Visa — The Smart Default

The e-visa is Vietnam's standard tourist visa, and for most travelers, it is the right choice even if you qualify for the Phu Quoc exemption. Why? It gives you flexibility to extend your trip to mainland Vietnam, or to arrive via a connecting flight, without worrying about exemption technicalities.

How to apply:

  1. Visit the only official site: evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn. Do not use the many commercial sites that charge double.
  2. Upload a passport photo (recent, 4×6 cm, white background) and a scan of your passport's photo page.
  3. Fill in travel dates, arrival airport/port, accommodation address (use Sabrina Homestay: 16 Nguyen Du Street, Duong Dong, Phu Quoc).
  4. Pay $25 USD (single entry, 30-day) or $50 (single entry, 90-day) or $50 (multiple entry, 30-day) by credit card.
  5. Wait 3 business days. You'll receive an email with a downloadable PDF. Print it (or save digitally) and bring it to the airport.

Tip: Apply at least 10 days before your flight. The 3-day processing is typical but occasionally slips; you do not want to arrive without a visa.

Visa on Arrival (VOA)

VOA is the older process that predates the e-visa. It still exists but is now only recommended if you cannot apply for an e-visa in time. The process requires a “visa approval letter” from a Vietnamese travel agency ($15–25 extra), then a stamping fee ($25) paid in cash at the airport. The e-visa is simpler, cheaper, and processes just as fast. Skip VOA unless you have a reason.

Extending Your Stay

If you entered visa-free or on a 30-day e-visa and want to extend, the process is handled by a licensed immigration agent, not directly by you. You cannot extend on Phu Quoc — you must send your passport to an agent in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or Da Nang. Processing takes 5–7 business days.

Cost: $40–80 for a 30-day extension, depending on the agent and urgency. Recommended: use a well-reviewed agent on Google Maps (e.g., “Vietnam Visa Agent HCMC”); avoid the random brokers who approach foreigners on the street.

Timing: Apply for the extension at least 7 days before your current visa/exemption expires. Do not wait until the last 48 hours.

Visa Runs from Phu Quoc

The easiest international exit from Phu Quoc is a flight to Cambodia. Multiple airlines operate PQC-to-Phnom Penh (PNH) or PQC-to-Siem Reap (REP) routes with fares starting around $80 one-way. Stay at least one night (same-day turnarounds are increasingly flagged by immigration), then return to Phu Quoc with a fresh 30-day e-visa you applied for in advance.

Total visa-run budget: $150–250 all-in (flight both ways + $25 e-visa + cheap Phnom Penh hotel for one night).

Alternative visa-run routes: Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore — all more expensive than Cambodia.

💡 Long-stay strategy: Many digital nomads staying 3–4 months do one visa run at month 2, extending their time in Vietnam by roughly a month beyond what a single e-visa allows. Budget a total of $100–150/month extra for visa-related costs if you're rotating.

Overstay & Penalties

Overstay fines in Vietnam:

Unlike some neighboring countries, Vietnam takes overstays seriously. Always exit on time or apply for a legal extension.

For Digital Nomads & Long Stays

Technically, doing remote work for foreign clients on a tourist visa operates in a legal gray area — prohibited on paper but essentially never enforced. What matters for long-term digital nomads:

What to Expect at Phu Quoc Airport

Arrival at Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) is fast. Typical flow:

  1. Deplane, walk 5 minutes to immigration hall
  2. Queue (usually under 20 minutes, even on busy days)
  3. Present passport + printed e-visa PDF (if applicable) OR just passport (if using 30-day exemption)
  4. Quick photo and fingerprint scan
  5. Stamp, straight to baggage claim

The whole process typically takes 25–45 minutes from plane to curb. Our airport transfer picks up directly outside arrivals.

FAQ

Do children need their own visa? Yes. Every passport holder, including infants, needs their own e-visa or qualifies individually for the exemption. There's no “family visa.”

I got my e-visa but realized I had a typo in my passport number. What now? You must cancel (non-refundable) and re-apply. Triple-check everything before submitting.

Do I need a printed e-visa, or is digital OK? Officially, a printed copy is required. In practice, digital on your phone is usually accepted — but bring a printed backup in case the Wi-Fi at the airport is flaky.

What if my return flight is cancelled and I need to overstay? Go to the immigration office in Duong Dong (or HCM if you're on the mainland) immediately with proof of the flight cancellation. They can usually grant a grace period free of charge, but you must document it proactively.

Is Phu Quoc visa-free policy guaranteed long-term? No. Governments can change policies with little notice. Always verify before a trip.

Can I enter mainland Vietnam via Phu Quoc airport by taking a domestic flight? Yes, but only if you have a proper Vietnam visa (e-visa, VOA, or other). The Phu Quoc exemption alone does NOT allow mainland travel.
