Duong Dong Town Orientation Map for Phu Quoc Guests

4.8/5 rating 👥 500+ guests hosted 📅 Hosting since 2018 📍 16 Nguyen Du, Duong Dong, Phu Quoc

You've arrived, you've dropped your bag. Now what? Duong Dong isn't hard to get around once you have a mental map, but the first afternoon can feel disorienting — streets have Vietnamese names, the beach is closer than it looks, and the ATMs that actually work reliably are not the ones right outside 7-Eleven. This is the orientation I give every guest when they check in: five streets worth knowing, where the cash machines are, which way points toward sand and which toward the market.

Duong Dong town orientation map for guests staying in Phu Quoc
TOWN SIZE
~1.5 km

Core walkable area end to end. Most places in 10–15 min on foot.

ATM CLUSTER
Tran Hung Dao

Three bank branches within 200 m. Most reliable cash point in town.

BEACH
Walk west

Long Beach starts 300–600 m west of Tran Hung Dao depending on where you are.

MARKET
Walk north

Morning market and night market are both at the northern end of town, near the river.

What does Duong Dong actually look like as a town?

Duong Dong is Phu Quoc's main town — the administrative centre, the airport hub, and the place where most accommodation and restaurants are concentrated. The walkable core is a rough rectangle about 1.5 km north to south and 600–800 m east to west.

The simplest frame: Tran Hung Dao is the spine. It runs more or less north–south through the centre of town and is where you'll do most of your daily life — ATMs, restaurants, convenience stores, tour agencies, motorbike rental shops. Everything else branches off from it.

To the west of Tran Hung Dao is the beach. Long Beach (Bai Truong) runs the full western side of Duong Dong. You can walk to the sand from most guesthouses in 5–15 minutes. To the north is the river mouth, the fishing harbour, the morning market, and the night market. To the east, the town thins out quickly into residential streets and fields.

Phu Quoc Airport is southeast of Duong Dong, roughly 9–10 km by road — so if you need to go back to the airport, you head south and then east, not north. First-timers get this wrong sometimes.

Which are the five streets worth memorising in Duong Dong?

You don't need to learn the whole town on day one. These five will cover the vast majority of what you actually need.

Street Direction / Location What's there Distance from Sabrina
Tran Hung Dao Runs N–S, town centre ATM cluster, restaurants, tour agencies, convenience stores, pharmacies ~700 m north (10 min walk)
Nguyen Du E–W, southern town Residential, local cafés, Sabrina Homestay is here at no. 16 You're on it
Tran Phu Runs N–S, west of Tran Hung Dao Beachfront strip, seafood restaurants, hotels, beach access lanes ~900 m northwest
Bach Dang Runs along west bank of river, north end Fishing harbour, boat tour operators, views toward Dinh Cau temple, night market entrance ~1 km north
30 Thang 4 Crosses town east–west, mid-section Local food stalls, morning traffic hub, connects Tran Hung Dao to beach roads ~600 m north

The street name that trips guests up most: 30 Thang 4 (meaning "April 30th" — a national holiday). It's written on signs as "30/4" which looks like a date, not a street name, the first few times you see it. Once you know that, it clicks. This cross-street is useful because it links Tran Hung Dao to the coastal hotels and is where several local rice restaurants cluster in the mornings.

A personal note: I spend most of my market mornings at the north end of town near Bach Dang before 7 AM. The light over the fishing boats there is genuinely one of my favourite things about living here. See the morning market walk guide for what that looks like as a proper walk.

Where to find ATMs and cash in Duong Dong

There are ATMs scattered across Duong Dong, but the three bank branches on Tran Hung Dao in the central section of town are the most reliable. They sit within roughly 200 m of each other and are the machines locals and long-term residents use when they need to be sure of getting cash.

Why does this matter? Single-branch machines near convenience stores run out of notes by early evening during peak season (December–March). The bank-branch ATMs refill more frequently and have higher daily limits — typically 5,000,000–7,000,000 VND per transaction depending on your card. If you plan to pay for tours, motorbike rental, or market meals in cash (and you will — most small vendors are cash only), withdraw what you need in the morning rather than counting on late-night machines.

The ATMs on Tran Hung Dao accept Visa, Mastercard, and most international debit cards. Expect a transaction fee of roughly 50,000–85,000 VND from the Vietnamese bank on top of whatever your home bank charges. Worth it for the reliability.

I always tell guests: the first morning, walk to Tran Hung Dao, sort your cash, and get a Vietnamese coffee from one of the stalls nearby. That one hour will orient you better than any map.

For more on practical logistics in the area, the pharmacy and practical services guide covers what else is on and near Tran Hung Dao.

Which direction is the beach — and which direction is the market?

Stand on Tran Hung Dao and face north (toward the river). Beach is to your left — west. Market is straight ahead and slightly right — north and northeast.

To the beach: Walk west from any point on Tran Hung Dao. The lanes that cut through between hotels lead directly to Long Beach. From central Tran Hung Dao the walk is 300–500 m (about 5 minutes at a normal pace). The beach runs roughly 15 km south from the northern tip of Long Beach — the northern section, closest to the night market, is quieter and less developed than the resort-heavy middle section. For walking distances from the homestay specifically, the Long Beach walking distance guide breaks it down entry-point by entry-point.

To the morning market: Head north along Tran Hung Dao and look for the covered market structure on the east side of the road, close to the river. It's about 400–500 m from the mid-point of Tran Hung Dao. Open from roughly 5:00 AM and winding down by noon. The freshest fish and vegetables are there before 7:30 AM.

To the night market (Dinh Cau): Also north, but you turn left (west) toward the river and harbour once you're near Bach Dang. The night market stalls set up on the waterfront near the Dinh Cau temple headland. From Sabrina Homestay, it's about 900 m — a 10–12 minute walk. Runs 5:00 PM to 10:30 PM daily. Read the full sunset walk guide if you want to combine it with the Dinh Cau temple visit.

One thing that's useful to remember: the river estuary cuts north Duong Dong roughly in half. Some addresses that look close on a flat map actually require a short detour across one of the bridges. The main bridges across the Duong Dong river are near the market end — so crossing between the harbour (west bank) and market (east bank) is easy, just adds a few minutes if you don't know which bridge to take.

Key distances from Sabrina Homestay on Nguyen Du

All distances below are by road — not straight-line. Streets here curve and intersect at odd angles, so "looks close on the map" sometimes means an extra 200 m of actual walking.

Destination Distance (road) Walking time Direction from homestay
Tran Hung Dao ATM cluster ~700 m 9–10 min North then east
Long Beach (nearest access) ~350 m 4–5 min West
Duong Dong morning market ~1.1 km 13–15 min North
Dinh Cau Night Market ~900 m 10–12 min North, then northwest
Dinh Cau Temple viewpoint ~1.0 km 12–14 min North, then west to headland
Central pharmacy on Tran Hung Dao ~700 m 9–10 min North then east
Phu Quoc Airport (by vehicle) ~9–10 km ~20–25 min by taxi/motorbike Southeast — taxi or motorbike required

The beach is the surprise here for most guests — people assume it's a long walk because it doesn't feel immediately present from the main road. But Nguyen Du sits very close to the water. You can be on the sand in under 5 minutes from the front door. See the Long Beach north walking guide for all the beach access points.

Are there useful lanes and side streets to know?

A few. The unnamed lanes that cut west from Tran Hung Dao between the beach hotels are the fastest way to reach the sand without walking all the way to Tran Phu first. They're mostly marked on Google Maps, though not always with names. If you see a lane heading west between two hotels on Tran Hung Dao, follow it — it almost certainly leads to a beach access point within 100–200 m.

The streets immediately east of Tran Hung Dao — mostly residential — are where a lot of the better local food is hiding. Com tam stalls, pho carts, and the kind of quan com (rice restaurant) where you point at what you want: these tend to be on the first or second parallel street east rather than on the tourist-facing main road. Prices are 30–40% lower than on Tran Hung Dao itself. This is also where most of the under-$5 eating options are concentrated.

One lane that confuses guests: the narrow road running along the west bank of the river (Bach Dang) looks on the map like it connects all the way south, but it dead-ends before reaching the southern residential area. If you're coming back from the harbour at night, don't try to walk south along the river — come back via Tran Hung Dao instead. Takes about 3 minutes longer but is well-lit the whole way.

For coffee specifically: several of the best local cafés are tucked into these side streets rather than on the main road. The coffee shops guide maps out the ones worth the small detour.

A note on offline maps before you leave the homestay

Mobile data in Duong Dong is reliable on main streets but can be patchy in side lanes, especially in the older residential areas east of Tran Hung Dao. Download your offline map area before going out — both Google Maps and Maps.me work well for Phu Quoc. The Google Maps download covers enough detail to navigate even unnamed lanes.

One practical habit: before heading somewhere new, screenshot the route on your phone. It sounds obvious, but if you lose signal mid-walk you'll be glad you did. Small alleys sometimes look identical and the screenshot takes 3 seconds.

Also worth saving: the homestay's address in Vietnamese — 16 Nguyễn Du, Dương Đông, Phú Quốc. If you're ever in a taxi or on a motorbike and need to get back, show the driver that text. Every local driver knows Nguyen Du.

I've been living on Nguyen Du since 2018. The town orientation in this guide is exactly what I tell guests when they arrive — nothing more, nothing less. Duong Dong is small enough that one good walk covers most of what you need to know. If you get turned around, just ask a local; everyone here knows where Tran Hung Dao is.
